Profile: Pienaar Van Niekerk

BIOGRAPHY
  • Pienaar is a prolific and widely selling artist of note. He began his Art studies under the renowned South African Old Master Landscape Artist Erik Laubscher in Cape Town, and later completed the BA Fine Art at Stellenbosch University, Stellenbosch, South Africa, going on to develop his mature artistic style.
  • My art has evolved in many ways over the years, yet I still have a strong spiritual connection with the natural world. I have recently explored my very personal experiences and worldview in my work. This has led to looking at my cultural roots and issues around language and their interaction with my socio-political environment.
  • My solo exhibition in 2011 where I paid tribute to the group of Afrikaans authors known as The Sestigers, has rekindled my interest in the connection between language and culture. This has led to many works dealing with the theme of image and text. I am currently dealing with the degeneration of material as a metaphor of changes in my own physical world.
  • Via the landscape, the content of my work deals chiefly with my personal take on socio-political, religious and spiritual themes. My research into ancient sacred religious sites in South Africa and the UK has inspired many of my works.
  • Pienaar is married to artist Sue Tatham and works full-time as an artist from his studio in Saint Helena Bay on the West Coast of South Africa.
