Artist Information

Born in 1962, Carl Preller matriculated from Grey College High School, and obtained a Master Degree in Political Science from the University of the Free State. He lived and worked in Pretoria for most of his life, and towards the end of 2021 relocated to Vermont, Hermanus.

Surrounded by creative influences throughout his  life, Carl's interest in art started as a child when he was inspired by a great aunt of his, a very talented artist. As child, through her influence, he participated in various children's art competitions.

It was only later in life that Carl took up watercolour painting as a hobby. His attendance of a Fynbos art course in Stellenbosch in 2018 triggered him to start painting again. In 2019 he enrolled for art classes with Fine Arts Teacher, Annelise Bowker at the Tina Skukan Gallery in Pretoria and attended her art classes for two years.

He focuses on watercolour as medium and his favorite subjects include flowers, town scenes and buildings. He draws his inspiration from his travels abroad and from his love of gardening and nature.

In 2020 Carl participated in an Online Art Competition and was voted as one of the top entries for his watercolour art work. He participated in two group exhibitions, the Art Students, as well as the Easter Exhibitions at the Tina Skukan Gallery in Pretoria in  2021.

Relocating to the beautiful and inspiring town of Hermanus  reignited his passion for watercolour painting. As Hermanus Art Circle (HAC) member he regularly participates in the First Friday's Art walk as part of the HAC's exhibition at the Whale House Museum, as well as at group art exhibitions at the Hermanus FynArts Festival and Kalfiefees.

Although watercolour painting is his favorite medium to work with, this has not stopped him from also experimenting in other mediums and techniques, such as watercolour pencils, soft pastel, colour pencils, portrait drawings and monoprints.

Carl hopes that when you look at his art works you also find your own individual meanings to each piece.

Carl is a proud member of the Hermanus Art Circle.
